Sodexo Campaign Update (Winter 2010)

DSC01900Throughout this school year, USASers at Ohio State have been working with workers of Sodexo to fight for the right to unionize.  Sodexo employees are not paid a living wage, can not afford healthcare, and Sodexo has a history of racism, among other abuses.  For more information, check out cleanupsodexo.com.  Complaints of sexual harassment, racism, and even being forced to work off the clock (unpaid) are all too common.

In response to the workers’ movement to unionize, management has been holding long one-on-one intimidating meetings with pro-union employees.  This is completely illegal, and we, as students, will not let this stand.  A student delegation was sent to the general manager on Thursday to let Sodexo know that students are aware of this issue and that we will not allow these illegal intimidating tactics to take place on our campus!

On a university level, students met with Kate Wolford, Assistant to the President and Director of Operations for The Ohio State University, as a response to a letter of demands delivered to President Gee’s office.  This meeting was a great chance to let OSU know that students care about this issue and want Ohio State to pressure Sodexo to treat their workers better.

The campaign is certainly going strong and students are excited to work with the employees side-by-side to fight for workers’ rights!

As more and more workers stand up for themselves, management has started holding long one-on-one captive audience meetings with vocal employees.  This is completely illegal, and we, as students, will not let this stand.  A student delegation was sent to the general manager on Thursday to let Sodexo know that students are aware of this issue and that we will not allow these illegal intimidation tactics to take place on our campus!
